Cacak,
the town on the banks of the river Zapadna Morava, in the central part
of Serbia, has been the place where the events that changed the course
of history took place. The remains of the Roman baths, monuments to Jupiter, Serapis and Isis, and especially archaeological site Gradina on the mountain Jelica, which is still a big secret, are the testimony of the existence of an important settlement from Roman times on the site where modern Cacak lies. The fortification, named Gradac located on the site of the present town of Cacak was mentioned in the second half of the 12th century. Stefan Stracimir, brother of Stefan Nemanja, who is considered to have founded the town, held court in it. Duke Stefan Stracimir was the founder of the monastery dedicated to Madonna – “Moravski Gradac”, which was proclaimed royal by Stevan Prvovencani, together with the monasteries Studenica, Djurdjevi stupovi and Hilandar. Today it is the church dedicated to Christ’s Ascension. The name Cacak was mentioned for the first time in 1408. During the Turkish occupation and Turkish-Austrian wars, as well as during the First and Second Serbian rising, the town of Cacak suffered a lot. So, the town’s church was three times turned into a mosque, and turned again into an orthodox church. The historical event which marked the 19th century on the territory of Cacak was the Battle at Cacak with the Battle at Ljubic, which was a determining factor in the Second Serbian rising. Today’s evidence of it is the monument to the famous hero Tanasko Rajic. In the 19th and the first half of the 20th century many buildings whose architectural beauty attracts the looks of the passers-by were built. The palace of Jovan Obrenovic belongs to the Oriental-Balkan style in architecture, and it was built in 1835. On the façade of this palace there is the family coat of arms of the Obrenovic family (the only one preserved in Serbia). The house of Vule Pantelic (Town’s house) dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is the most representative example of construction from the reign of Milos Obrenovic. One of the biggest buildings in Serbia in the 19th century was built by Ferdinand Kren at Cacak, whose name is also connected with the construction of the hotel “Kren” (hotel “Beograd” today)… Now, Cacak is the town of young people, the town which carries on the tradition, honour and glory of the past, but is also the first to accept the ideas of the new times. Cacak is one of the most developed cultural centres in Serbia. Famous artists such as the painters Nadezda Petrovic, Bogic Risimovic Risim and others, poets Vladislav Petkovic Dis, Dragoslav Grbic, Branko V. Radicevic, Branislav Petrovic lived and worked in it. Many cultural institutions are located in Cacak: the National Museum, the Gallery “Nadezda Petrovic”, Town’s Library, Cultural Centre, Cacak Film, Photographs Showroom, Amateur Photo and Film Makers Club, Association of Cultural and Educational Workers etc. There are numerous societies, radio and TV stations in it. Various cultural and tourist manifestations take place at Cacak all the year round. Cacak is an important economic, cultural, sports and tourist centre. There are many different resorts near Cacak. Visitors of Cacak can see and experience a lot, so that many of them are eager to come back to this town. |
